Baseball great Jim Abbott was presented one of two SPIRIT (Strength, Perseverance, Integrity, Role-model, Independence, Trailblazer) awards at the 7th annual New Freedom Initiative Award program held in Washington, DC.
Abbott, a former Major League Baseball pitcher for the California Angels, Chicago White Sox, Milwaukee Brewers and New York Yankees who retired in 1999, is still using his talent this time to help raise awareness about the value people with disabilities bring to America's businesses by serving as the spokesman for the U.S. Department of Labor's Office of Disability Employment Policy's (ODEP) PITCH (Proving Individuals with Talent Can Help) campaign.
